A Monument to Power and Love
Abu Simbel consists of two massive rock temples built by Pharaoh Ramesses II around 1264 BCE. The larger temple honors Ramesses himself, while the smaller one is dedicated to his beloved wife, Queen Nefertari.
The Sun Festival
Twice a year, on February 22 and October 22, the sun aligns perfectly to illuminate the inner sanctuary, spotlighting statues of the gods and the pharaoh.
The UNESCO Rescue
In the 1960s, the entire temple complex was relocated 65 meters higher to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser - one of the greatest archaeological engineering feats in history.
